- Compared with GFP and RFP, the excitation and emission spectra of near infrared (NIR) fluorescent proteins are located in the "optical window" (~ 650-900nm) which is most conducive to light penetration into tissues. They have low cellular spontaneous fluorescence, reduced light scattering and minimal absorption of hemoglobin, melanin and water. They are more ideal marker molecules for deep imaging of animal living tissues.
